Web Page Building
Part 1 Basics

Last week we looked at getting a domain name, and the hosting you will need to put your own website out on the web. This week we are going to be looking at building your website using a free tool that is available in your Vortex back office. That tool is a webpage builder called Nvu (N-view).  You do NOT need any knowledge of website building or HTML (the language websites are built in).

Create Your Web Site

The next step is to actually build your web site using Nvu. Your web site can be basic or complicated and it all depends on what your goals are. We recommend that you start off simple while you are learning how to use Nvu. As your knowledge and skills increase you can start to build more sophisticated web sites. Nvu makes it as easy to build your web site as to use a word processing program. The more complicated your web site, the more knowledge and understanding of HTML and the Web you will need to have, but don't worry about that at the moment as you will find that you pick things up as you go along.

We recommend the following guidelines when building your web site:

   • Store all of your web pages and images in the same directory
   • Only images in the format: .gif, .jpg, and .png are usable on the web
   • Do not use spaces in your file names
   • Do not use capital letters in your file names
   • Your web pages can have the extension .htm or .html but you should pick only one
   • Learn how to create basic sites before you try more advanced things

There are many great tutorials on the Web that will explain some of the basics of creating web pages. If you are serious about creating a web site we recommend that you spend some time learning the "tricks of the trade" to get a better understanding of how to create great sites.

  •         Step 1.   you  must  download  the  software

Download  Site for  NVU    http://www.download.com/Nvu/3000-2048_4-10412422.html

  •   Step 2.  create  a folder on your  desktop  name it  my sites.  To  create a  new folder  on  your  desktop  right click  any  where on your desktop  and  you will  see the  word  new  go there  and  you will see  the word  folder click  folder.  When  the  folder comes up  type in the  words  my sites.  Open  now  open  your  new folder  click on  file  again the word  new and folder. So now  you  have  a  folder  within  your  my web sites  folder.  Name this folder My web sites,  you  will  need   two  or  three more  folders  within  your  my sites desktop folder.  In  fact you  may  create as  many  folders  as you  need  to keep  all  your  information organized  and  easy  to  find. Once you  start  building your  web  pages  you  will  always save  them  on  your  desktop  in  the  my sites folder.
